Sunrise Foster Home

Individual Project

Tehran, 2017

Sunrise Foster Home is an effort to create a safe and nurturing shelter for children who, for various reasons, cannot remain in their homes or with their families. Often transitioning between foster care systems and shelters, these children face uncertainty and emotional distress. The project aims to provide a stable and caring environment that supports their emotional well-being and development.

The main objective is to design a space that fosters the healthy growth of children and adolescents by offering both security and a sense of belonging. The design is rooted in creating a welcoming environment that allows children to gradually reintegrate into society. It includes residential units designed around communal living principles, with an emphasis on integrating with the local community and maintaining a connection to adjacent public spaces like parks. Throughout the design process, the impact of the built environment on children's development and well-being was a central consideration.

One of the key challenges in existing shelters is the lack of defined personal space, leading to conflict, lack of privacy, and a sense of instability. This project addresses these issues through spatial planning that promotes comfort and flexibility, along with careful interior design and material selection to minimize institutional and stressful cues. Attention was given to natural light, color, air quality, and environmental factors, all of which contribute to a healthier living space for children.
